An overview of international “smart road” projects is presented and the importance of using artificial intelligence and multi-agent systems for the further development of the road transport system is shown. Purpose: to study and analyze the international experience of implementing smart roads projects and their prospects for using multi-agent systems. Results: a comparative analysis of the existing projects has demonstrated their diversity and significance and allowed grouping them by scale and focus. Modern practices have demonstrated the effectiveness of artificial intelligence and multi-agent systems in road transport management. Practical significance: digitalization and intellectualization of the road transport system in order to increase traffic efficiency and road safety.
